Review of 535 Bukit Batok
Thom Signature Reviews: 535 Bukit Batok
Project Description
For the Bukit Batok 535 Project, the client is a homeowner who moved out temporarily for a major renovation. The family consists of a couple, three children, one helper, and a dog. The house features three rooms upstairs—one for the parents, one for the son, and one shared by the two daughters.
Design approach
The concept for this renovation was a fusion of Wabi-Sabi and Scandinavian styles. The design incorporated wood grain accents with beige and sand-colored laminates, creating a warm and natural aesthetic. The project involved significant spatial modifications to improve functionality and aesthetics while maintaining a warm and cozy atmosphere.
Living Room:
In the living area, the original glass door separating the balcony was removed, leveling the space to create an open and seamless layout. A skylight was installed—fulfilling the client’s long-time wish—bringing in ample natural light. The laundry area was creatively integrated into the balcony, enclosed within a built-in TV storage cabinet and a fresh cabinet system that discreetly housed the washing machine. This thoughtful arrangement allowed the laundry area to be concealed when guests were present.
Kitchen:
The kitchen underwent a major transformation, shifting from a traditional enclosed layout to a semi-open concept that enhances natural light flow. A foldable window and a sliding door were installed to provide flexibility—allowing the space to be enclosed while cooking and opened up when not in use.
Bedrooms:
On the second level, the original master bedroom was reassigned to the two daughters, while the common bedroom was converted into the new master suite. A window was added to an upstairs room adjacent to the staircase, improving natural ventilation and lighting. The flooring was fully revamped—vinyl flooring was installed from the staircase to the second level, creating a cohesive and comfortable feel for the bedrooms.
Bathrooms:
The bathroom layouts were also reconfigured, with the common toilet becoming part of the master bedroom and vice versa. The bathrooms were fully revamped to align with the home’s aesthetic, ensuring both style and practicality. High-quality finishes and fixtures were chosen to enhance durability and ease of maintenance.
The homeowners envisioned a home that seamlessly blended functionality with a warm, natural aesthetic. The use of wood grain textures, earthy tones, and carefully curated storage solutions created an inviting and harmonious space. The thoughtful integration of skylights, open layouts, and concealed storage solutions resulted in a home that is both practical and aesthetically pleasing—perfectly tailored to the family’s needs and lifestyle.
